[Updated] Lets NOT Cede the High Gound to Daily Kos

Update [2008-5-6 12:30:1 by Why Not]: the targetted diary has made the rec list, great job MyDD!! And thank you all for your assistance to these people in need.

Well it is with great displeasure that I note that we are ceding the high ground to Daily Kos which so many here find distasteful.

Today there is a recommended diary on Daily Kos on the recommended list about the tragedy in Burma (Myanmar).  Initial reports place the death toll at 10,000 and now these numbers are skyrocketing to over 40,000.

http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/5 /6/74151/21123/945/509583

They have kept this important request for aid in their recommended list despite the primary being held today.

One might think people here on MyDD would feel similarly about the human tragedy that is unfolding half a world away.  Alas it is not that way; our diary here on the subject has 3 comments and only 8 recommendations (not nearly enough) to stay on the Rec list.

Please click the story below, recommend it and let's keep it there so that people can see the toll and help with donations for these people in need.

Thank You

I didn't see the diary (2.00 / 3)

if you edit and stop making this some petty competition with dkos winning the "high ground" , I'll recommend the diary.

Re: I didn't see the diary (2.00 / 3)

I didn't ask for a rec for this diary, I asked for a rec for the diary I linked that was not mine.  I did the D Kos thing to get people's attention since sometimes that is what it takes..

Re: I didn't see the diary (2.00 / 2)

I don't think she expressed her intention to rec this (your) diary.  I think she said if you'd change this (your) diary to edit out the dKos silliness, she'd go and rec the other diary.

For what it's worth, I think Theresa and I have the same visceral reaction - I got abused and dissed and harassed on dKos and anything to do with dKos turns me off and is most definitely not a motivator for me.

The bridge is burnt.  Kos' support of Myanmar mirrors support by those who visit this site and many others.  Kos offers nothing to too many Democrats.

Re: Lets Ceede the High Gound to Daily Kos (2.00 / 12)

This is nothing new. Daily Kos has continued to be a place for positive candidate diaries and diaries about the many other important things going on in the world (like the Myanmar disaster, the environment, the FISA fight, etc.)

I still comment here because I find its more of a sport. Its kind of a thrill to post something and get it troll rated by people who don't agree with you just because they're upset.

But if you want civil discourse, go over there. Obviously, a lot of people here will say the exact opposite, and claim that Daily Kos is some kind of backwards, hate filled world. But that's because when they go over there, their trolling is actually met with resistance, and it pisses them off.

I hope that when this primary season is over, MyDD can revert back into something other that a collection of Clinton talking points. I mean, seriously, at least twice a day something is on the rec list that just quotes a Clinton Memo!

Civil discourse?

That cracks me up.  I spent three years on dKos and loved much of it; I tried to stay on for several months, taking refuge in only the non-political diaries and virtual communities, but as it more and more became an Obama-only site, the civil discourse disappeared and it became impossible to remain.

Civil war is more accurate than civil discourse.

Re: Lets Ceede the High Gound to Daily Kos (2.00 / 6)

can you really not handle it? seriously, its a blog, not  a war zone. I think you just can't deal with people who don't agree with you.
So what if dailykos is pro-obama, should some people be required to support Hillary just so its more even-handed?

No one's complaining about this site being too pro-Hillary. Its the fact that most of the diaries lack substances and just come directly from Clinton campaign talking points and some of them are just downright racist.

You will not find that on Dailykos. You will find news of his endorsements, new supers he's gotten, pictures from the campaign trail, analysis of his plans, clips of speeches, etc.

lots of crypto-kos-sitters complain about that each and every day. almost every day there is a diary whining about how they are treated unfairly here and asked hard questions and stuff when they re-post RW hate from there. you're whine falls on it's face under the weight of the unsupported assumptions and willful ignorance of your post.

For starters, thanks for the online psycho-analysis - it's helpful to know that I can't handle disagreement.

Where did you buy your blinders?  I'd like me a pair - it'd make life much less stressful.

I'll be the first to admit that there's a lot of crap on this site, both anti-Obama and anti-Clinton and plenty of scurrilousness, but dKos and myDD are no different in that regard and this pretension that they are is the real story of the "progressive" net roots.

Re: Lets Ceede the High Gound to Daily Kos (2.00 / 1)

You are the one who said you couldn't deal with that site. And seeing as though theres no possible way other bloggers could be inflicting physical harm on you, I don't see how this is anything other than you not wanting to deal with people who disagree with you.

In regards to the content of Dailykos diaries, I was referring to rec'd diaries. On a site that big, there will be just as much trash and troll diaries as there are here, but while racist shit makes the rec list here, what makes it to the rec list on DailyKos is almost always (with few exceptions) of much higher caliber.

There are complaints all the (2.00 / 1)

time about a pro Hillary bent.  I was not wanted there - there was a gang of posters who were downright angry and nasty about anything I might post about Hillary -

Your last paragraph is really not true - and there is a definite bias against older people - I had no idea that I and the baby boomers were so disliked by younger people and that we caused so much pain in the world.

But you're right - it's just a blog - I just don't like maurading gangs and Kos encourages it obviously - so fare thee well and if forever fare thee well -

I am disappointed too there are few diaries about anything but the candidate wars though - and I miss some of the wonderful diarists who wrote about the natural world on Kos.

and Catholics/christians - I really don't miss those slings and arrows.  and my armour was getting a bit bent -

Re: There are complaints all the (2.00 / 2)

obviously, there are shitty diaries over at dkos, too. but I was referring to what makes the rec list, which is a much better indication of what the attitude of the site is.

In regard to the bias against older people, I'm not sure exactly to what you are referring to, but I can tell you one possible reason for the bias you are seeing.

A lot of clinton supporters have been downright insulting to young obama supporters, calling us naive and blind for not seeing past the speeches, etc. The whole kool-aid/ cult thing is disgusting, and  that's probably where most of that bias comes from.

Re: There are complaints all the (none / 0)

Just a question - how long have you been a member of dKos?  If you've been there more than six months or so, you've surely seen, to paraphrase you, that:

A lot of obama supporters have been downright insulting to older clinton supporters, calling us stupid and hide-bound for not seeing past the lack to content in obama's speeches, etc. The ageist discrimination and the whole bush/clinton/bush/clinton dynasty thing is disgusting, and  that's probably where most of that bias comes from.

Re: There are complaints all the (none / 0)

Ok, what's your point, this happens on both sides, I was just trying to give the motivation for the generational divide on the young voters side. I'm sure older supporters have their reasons to be biased as well.

Personally, I loved the cooking/recipe diaries, the what are you reading diaries and the gardening diaries.

After reading so much about how the internet was changing the concept of "community" I really thought of dKos as the first genuine online community I'd experienced.  Who knew that such standard real-time community practices such as exclusionary zoning and gated communities (If you're not like me, you don't belong here!) could make the transition to online?

Which makes this double inane for me.

The funniest part about being admin banned, was I still had treasure troves of mojo stockpiled.

While I couldn't diary or comment anymore, I could still change tags. Which I did repeatedly, to Kos's FP stories.

That's my biggest qualm with Daily Kos and such, is that it has become a World of Warcraft for the Democratic Party junkies.

Whether he is a dem or rep is irrelevant to this particular conversation.  Your post insinuated that he was using these particular words to insult Chelsea and was thus the motive for your decision to leave here.  I think it's pretty clear (and everyone has the right to disagree) that he wasn't insulting Chelsea in any way but was rather castigating Hillary for saying anything complimentary about John McCain.

Re: Lets Ceede the High Gound to Daily Kos (2.00 / 5)

Which is exactly why I enjoy visiting dkos.

The purpose of the site is not to bash and smear other democratic candidates, like a particular site I know of, but to provide meaningful discussion about many important topics, in and outside of the political realm. Many here, instead of bashing dkos, should allow themselves to be open-minded about the countless daily diaries concerning science, the environment, the Israeli-Palestine issue, etc. But most here find more joy in smearing Barack. To hell with any meaningful issue that would interfere with that!!!

Last nite, they had a drive to  feed the weary Barack campaign office staff in NC and IN that was pretty successful I might add. So alot of you can take your "evil sunshine" or orange and put it you know where because they do excellent works over there.

Keep up the good work, kos.

Your right, they're work support for the military junta of Burma threw their paymasters at Chevron to kill monks in the forest is truly excellent work.

Keep up the good work, kos, those monks aren't from Tibet after all.

Right -

"Last nite, they had a drive to  feed the weary Barack campaign office staff in NC and IN that was pretty successful I might add"

I challenge you - I challenge you - go back to dKos and start a drive to feed the weary Clinton office staff in NC and IN tonight.  Then come back to MyDD and report on your success with that.

What about this do you people not understand:  many of us in MyDD were involved, active dKos members for years, until we were harassed off of the site simply because we chose to support Clinton over Obama.

You can go to dKos and look up all my diaries and comments - you won't see instances of me attacking or criticizing Obama - but I was harassed off of the site anyway, simply b/c I didn't support Obama.

Ag; (2.00 / 1)

I will concede that Dkos is pro-Obama but my point is that their MAIN focus is not on bashing Hillary. They do concern themselves with being pro-active on a host of worthwhile issues,i.e., the Myanmar disaster and the food drive for Obama campaign staff, which is continuing today.

If you are so concerned about the stomachs of Hillary campaign staffers, why don't you start a drive of your own here at mydd? I am a Barack supporter, and I am concerned about HIS staff being well-fed and energized to help HIM get elected.

Just what I want to read about (none / 0)

Feeding and comforting of Obama supporters and their road stories and photos of the messiah and the disciples.  Yuck!

Re: [Updated] Lets NOT Cede the High Gound to Dail (2.00 / 4)

It's a VERY common occurence on Dkos to have rec'd diaries that have nothing to do with the primary...we have a wide range of political issues:
On the Dkos rec list right now(even though it's primary day):

"Investigate the Pentagon Pundit"(a diary about improprieties at the pentagon

"NO POLITICS, PLEASE, WE'RE DYING"(a diary about Myanmar)

"WWII Vet Commits Suicide outside VA Clinic"(title says it all)

Investigate the Pentagon Pundit (none / 0)

Isn't Kerry a Senator sitting on the
Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, with said foreign relations being tainted by government generated propaganda?

I mean, yeah, I'll write and letter and what not, but isn't he actually in a position to do something?

I find his take on the situation comical and laking in leadership.

This is a petty diary. Really is so sad. It's like those taunts at school. 'My mum is better than yours'. Really how sad.

Re: [Updated] Lets NOT Cede the High Gound to Dail (none / 0)

I am sorry you find this diary petty.  I only posted it in this fashion because I saw that the diary for aid to Myanmar was sinking.

NO ONE SEEMED TO CARE.  The diary was falling off the recent diary list without the recs to make it to the rec list.  So I got people's attention with this diary so that we could rescue it to raise the profile of what I consider to be an important issue.  Was I wrong for pushing peoples buttons to do the right thing?

I am not taking credit for the diary, I just wanted something this important not to slip through the cracks.

Re: [Updated] Lets NOT Cede the High Gound to Dail (none / 0)

The diary was petty. Because you were starting this 'us and them' meme v DKos. So what they put up a diary for the disaster.
You should start a diary without negating their good effort and making this into a Obama v Clinton thing.

It was callous and petty. Shame on you.

Re: [Updated] Lets NOT Cede the High Gound to Dail (none / 0)

You really don't see the point.

first of all it was not an Obama Vs Clinton thing, it was a Dkos vs MyDD thing.

Second, if it were based upon just the merits of the original post this would have been burried.

I used the only surefire way to get it to the rec list, sorry if it offended you.

Re: 22,000 dead and you're worried about Kos? (2.00 / 3)

Ugh.

The diarist isn't really worried about dKos. S/he was just trying to get people's attention so they would go rec the other diary it before it scrolled off the recent diaries list.  Putting something about dKos in the title of your diary is a great way to get people to click on it. Ridiculous, I know, but that's the way it is around here.
